Getting StartedAt the start of our work together we will agree a contract between us. I use mainly Sensorimotor Psychotherapy techniques to help us explore and deal with the issues that you feel are limiting you and need to be explored.

Confidentiality
All that is discussed within the counselling session will be treated confidentially, however in certain rare circumstances, where you have revealed something that suggests there is a substantial risk to your health or to other people, for example you tell me you feel you are likely to complete suicide, I may have to share that information with relevant people (your GP, social worker or, extremely rarely, the Police) to ensure safety of all concerned. Depending on the nature of the information I may have a legal or ethical obligation to report the disclosed information. If this need arises I will endeavour to discuss the action I must take before I do so, but even without your consent I may have to report information. Information I must report would include disclosure of criminal activity by you or named others, either now or in the past, and where there is any risk of harm to a child.
Method
Each session will last approximately 55 minutes; it will involve you telling me the things that are bothering you, and we will explore this through conversation and noticing how your body responds as you speak about these things. The work will involve letting the body responses give us information about yourself that you may not previously have been consciously aware of, and then we can work with this new information. The aim of this type of counselling is to let you find new insights and the emotional responses to these insights so that these emotions can be acknowledged and worked through. This will usually let memories that were held traumatically become normal memories that do not disturb us. We will usually agree tasks or homework to do between sessions to help you get used to new ideas and ways of coping with life.
