Dr Maureen Stevenson
I worked as a General Practitioner for over 25 years and have met many people who have physical symptoms that appear to have originated in difficulties in their relationships or after a traumatic event or events, in their life. Often despite medical treatments such as pain relief and antidepressants the symptoms continue, and sometimes, although they have tried many different things, the person does not feel much better and may even feel there is no help out there for them.
Sensorimotor Psychotherapy uses body responses that we can observe. As we bring attention to these they help us access deep emotions and beliefs that we hold about ourselves following traumatic experiences. As these emotions and beliefs are brought to the surface, healing of deep hurts can occur, and new opportunities for living differently can be developed. Counselling at Renew aims to be a gentle and safe experience - we will move at your pace and keep the process under review. You can stop at any time. |

Testimonials
Sensorimotor Psychotherapy has given me my life back.
Having suffered from depression and anxiety for many years, and ever more debilitating physical symptoms for example : migraine; generalised pain; chronic fatigue etc. I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia and was struggling to continue to work as well as care for my family. When I started Sensorimotor Psychotherapy with Dr Stevenson she explained to me how my body stores past trauma and that this can then show itself in the types of symptoms from which I was suffering. Through Sensorimotor Psychotherapy I was able to understand my symptoms, I was able to explore past trauma in a safe and supportive environment and I was taught the tools to manage in stressful situations. Dr Stevenson is a caring, empathetic and professional therapist. Through Sensorimotor Psychotherapy Dr Stevenson has gently led me to a place of inner strength, peace and importantly independence. No longer confused and afraid, now equipped with knowledge and specific tools that have guided me on a path to health and wholeness, where hope, joy and happiness are being experienced once more. I am a lady in my mid 60’s who recently experienced a few severe panic attacks; some years ago it might have been called a nervous breakdown.
As I had never heard of Sensorimotor Psychotherapy I didn’t know what to expect from such counselling. There was no personal awareness that the many difficult events experienced over my life time, including cancer, were considered trauma and may have contributed to my attacks. Since starting Sensorimotor Psychotherapy I have dealt with issues relating to unresolved trauma that I thought were safely put in a box somewhere at the back of my mind. I didn’t realise that putting them in a box wasn’t dealing with them. Sensorimotor Psychotherapy has helped me to heal from past experiences using body and mind awareness techniques relevant to my individual need. This method of healing is gentle; it moved at my pace and is conducted in a safe and comfortable environment. |
